The loader works great, there are no alterations to the hydraulics other than the two spool remote. It is the stock 4gpm pump. I have done alot of work with the loader, enough that I had to fix some welds and a tear. I also made a logging winch for it and use the tractor for skidding. I think the tractor is too light to expect the loader to work well in 2wd however, but I have moved some pretty big rocks and built a road.

Well now you have me curious myself. My short answer is that I have seen them turning...but now with the tractor at camp perhaps I was wrong. I will have to try it out with this conversation in mind. But just off the top of my head it seems like as i brake the rear wheels while in gear the fronts continue to turn..isnt this what the differentials would do? transfer torque to the free turning wheel?

I was sort of curious about this so I called our local steel supplier. 1" thick flat stock runs about 40 pounds/square foot. 1x12 sells for $15.25/ft and 1x6 runs $7.00/ft. They also charge a 1 hour minimum to cut at $60/hr (which I think is steep) Still I would bet you could beat the JD price pretty easily just by buying the cut steel from a local supplier. Depending on your set up also you might be able to have them cut some of the mounting divots since you are paying for an hour of plasma cutting anyway.

We have 30 acres in the Adirondacks of NY with a small camp (NY for cabin) I have a 1982 Ford 1500 4wd with loader that I bought used last summer from the local Ford/New Holand dealer. I use it to maintain the woods road and small scale logging. I have built a nice cross slope road and a bridge that I never would have even tried without the tractor. Prolly would have cost close to the cost of the tractor to have the roadwork contracted. I built a 3pt logging winch that has really worked nicely, although right now I am having a beefier piece made for the winch clutch. I would like to find cheap or make a pto sawmill as I have lots of poplar which would make nice saw logs but cannot find a market for. Maybe someday, after we build the house, I might be able to mow with my tractor also :-)

Old Farm Tractors are the way to go...but make very sure you choose a utility tractor with a wide front end. The early Ford Compacts were designed as small farm tractors and can be found for the same money as typical farm tractors...these would include the 1500 1700 1900 1510 1710 1910...I would stay away from the 1200 and 1600. If you get one of these Ford Compacts make sure it is 4wd since they are too light to offer much traction in the 2wd models.

One other thing...if you are new to tractors you might buy used through a dealer. If you have a good dealer close to you they will work with you and help you out with lots of questions and also be more likely to stand behind their sale than a private seller might be. I would go to Farm Tractor dealers and not Lawn and Garden.

There's no place for Fords! Unless you want to lumpem in with New Holland which I guess makes sense...but maybe the category could be NH/Ford and drop the Boomer since Boomer is really a product name not a manufacturer. (and an awful name imho for that matter :-) For that matter what exactly defines a "compact tractor"? HP? Weight? Made in Japan :-)?<br>Prolly it falls into the category of "cant exactly describe it but I know one when I see one. In any case Ford especially had a very distinct line of compacts that were manufactured in japan 1X00 1X10 and 1X20 that predated NewHolland and whose owners would certainly not want to be known as Boomer Users :-)ThanksKim Hartshorn

I have found many sites that have pictures of different tractors, mostly vintage but some with new tractors. I have not seen any site with pictures of compact tractors. For general knowledge and education it would be nice to see the tractors that people talk about on this forum. Additionally some of the compact tractors are old enough to almost be vintage themselves. (Like the Ford 1000 series or how about the Allis Chalmers G ) Does anyone know of a site that has pictures like these? Or perhaps a picture archive could be created here?ThanksKim Hartshorn

I bought a Ford 1500 4WD with the Ford 770 loader this summer from a dealer for $6500. I have sort of compared since then and I feel that this price was in the ball park, especially since I bought it from a dealer. I have seen the 2WD without the loader advertised for the same price. The 1500 is a 20 HP tractor, 17 at the PTO. The 1X10 series used the 3 cylinder diesel the 1500 is a two cylinder. I have been happy with this tractor and it has done everything I have needed it to do so far, working mostly in the woods. I have not had it out of 4wd though for more than about 5 minutes :-) I would think the backhoe and snowblower could add 2-4k to the price depending on their condition.

I was told something similar with my ford truck. Here In NY state the inspection does not allow any drips in order to pass. Good, but anal, mechanics refused to pass my 9 year old truck because the ps was weeping. I was told that it could be rebuilt for about $40 plus labor but that it would only last for 2 weeks. So they refused to do it. They also said the unit had to be replaced for about $500. It was very frustrating since now I had a failed inspection sticker waving at every trooper on the road.<br>I finally just took the truck to the more friendly guy down the road and left the ps alone. What they told me was that just replacing the seals was not enough because the rod was scored and that the rod alone was not available for <br>a rebuild.<br>Thank goodness they dont inspect tractors in NY state.....yet :-)<br><br>Kim

I recently bought a Ford 1500 4wd with the loader and am very happy with it. What kind of work are you doing with it? I can tell you that I work mine in a hilly woodlot with unimproved roads and have only had it out of 4wd maybe twice.<br>Whenever I start to think that maybe 2wd might work in a particular situation I am almost always wrong. Unimproved, loose gravel roads, going uphill even without a load have all required 4wd. I have done quite a bit of work with this tractor including cutting a road across a slope, I know I would not have been able to do it with the 2wd version. If you are mowing or using the tractor mostly on fairly level terrain the 2wd should work. One thing, the PTO is dependent and clutches with the transmission, this will affect how you work with your impliments, if you are going to mow you will need an overriding PTO adapter to allow the blade to freewheel past stopped or idling PTO shaft.<br>Oaktree has a picture of my tractor posted at his site:<br>http://www.springfieldbiz.com/oaktree/fordtractor.htm<br>Good Luck<br>Kim

The information on the small tractor faq page is out of date...at least for the ford tractors the newholland part numbers are no longer available. Safe-T-Cab makes rops for almost everything. They are very expensive. Some manufacturers have a special agreement with Safe-T-Cab to help defray costs. Go to the Safe-T-Cab site and send them email with your requirements.<br>http://www.saftcab.com<br>This whole topic annoys me to no end since it is such a necessary piece of safety equipment. I still think they should be provided by any dealer selling used tractors. There's got to be what...$35 of materials in a ROPS? I suppose the reason that the cost close to $1000 (if not covered on one of the plans) is due to insurance concerns...gimme a break!<br>Kim

This is not a character from Rugrats....only boomer parents would know about this anyway :-)<br>This is one of the cooolest and goofiest things I have seen. I want one! Does anyone have one? Does it live up to expectations?<br>For those of you who havent seen it. It is a 4wd kubota diesel powered...tractor...with a three person cab, front and rear 3pt hitch, optional loader, dump bed (yes that's right a dump bed) and hp and hydraulics in the exceptionally capable range. I have a 1/4 woods road I want to try to keep clear this winter. It is not exactly level. I have a loader, I also adapted a towbehind grader blade to a 3pt backblade. I anticipate that since the road is not very flat that using either the loader or the blade might be a bit of a headache. Has anyone made skids or floats or whatever they might be called to keep a blade from digging into the road? My thought is that I should prolly make something to keep the blade from digging in and go backwards with the tractor. Any thoughts?<br>Thanks<br>Kim

The home market for small tractor forestry is Northern Europe...that's why all of the 3pt logging winches and small hydraulic loaders and log trailers and <br>such are all made in Finland, Norway and Sweden by Farmi and Frangstad and Norse and Patu and such. It was explained to me that for the most part there are no trees taller than 100' or wider than 12

In any case whatever tractor you decide on it is the implements that will be making the work possible. If you buy the Chinese tractor and beat it up, you can still put the winch on something else. The winch is likely to cost as much as the chinese tractor :-)

It sounds to me like a carry-all is really what you need. It is much less expensive than 3pt forks. It is quite home-buildable. You could even make one out of wood or slotted steel. The one I have I bought for $60 brand new at an auction. (The dealer sold 8 at that price)<br>Good Luck<br>Kim
